I have really enjoyed working on the website for the Offa’s Dyke Association, newly launched at the beginning of March.  They’re a fantastic organisation to work with, and the site has been a fun challenge.  I was able to take their existing database of accommodation providers and automatically mark them on digital Ordnance Survey maps, in such a way that the image is generated on the fly and is therefore 100% up to date.  If the staff working for the Association make a change, that change is reflected immediately.  As a walker myself, I think the new site and accommodation maps are going to be very helpful to the many people interested in Offa’s Dyke; I’ve certainly had some lovely comments so far.

Yesterday, we launched the new Visit Knighton website.  Mobile friendly, with a modern new look, and letting various members of the local community log in and make changes when they need to without having to refer to a web designer for help.  What do you think?

This article is well worth a read.  If you’re not being serious enough about your data, it could add up to some big losses.  Kaspersky reckons the average cost for a SMB when recovering from a data breach is $38,000 – can your business absorb that kind of cost?

There’s some very compelling arguments in this article in favour of getting a website, even for the smallest of business.  Almost a fifth of Britain’s small business population – 60% of the smallest UK businesses – still haven’t got a website, according to a survey by web hosting company GoDaddy.  It doesn’t have to be daunting, or a major capital investment.  Give me a call and you’d be amazed at how reasonable my deals can be.

20140710_100731I’m excited to be working with the Knighton and District Tourism Group to revamp their website.  They’re looking to make it more responsive, mobile compatible, and they would like to be able to update things themselves without having to wait for a web designer to make an update for them.  I’ll be doing this pro bono, since I’ve been on the periphery of the group for some time and would really like to help them succeed however I can.  Lending some technical skills seemed to be the perfect option!

They’ve got a fantastic new logo, and it’ll be a really fun project, I think.  Watch this space!

why-you-need-a-website-2-I found a great article today that explains why you need a website.  Yes, you.  The article can be found by clicking here, and it’s well worth a read in full, but to summarise the key points:

  • “customers, potential employees, business partners and perhaps even investors can quickly and easily find out more about your business and the products or services you have to offer”
  • “With a well-designed site, your little operation can project the image and professionalism of a much larger company”
  • “if you don’t have a website, you’re losing business to other companies that do”

It’s all true.  A website needn’t cost the earth, and can add a lot of value to your business.  How many people really look for businesses in the Yellow Pages any more?

Every single time I deal with Linode, I’m impressed.  For years I lived in the States, so my Linode virtual servers were naturally in the States too – somewhere in Dallas, Texas apparently.  Now that I’m back in the UK, it made sense to move at least the ones where the websites live to the UK too.  Any guesses how long that took?

45 minutes per server.  With no downtime, since I purchased new servers in the UK and used the Linode automated ‘clone’ facility to copy everything from the US to the UK.  There was a big warning about potential inconsistencies if I did that while the server was running, but I thought I’d give it a go since they’re just web servers with very few updates going on.  Absolutely flawless.  I shut down the US copies yesterday evening, and will be getting rid of them today.

I sent quite a few support questions to Linode before I took this step, and every single one was responded to within an hour and a quarter.  Most of them within 2-5 minutes.  Phenomenal, particularly for a company that is now 24 years old and big enough to have recently spent $45 million on hardware upgrades.  They still provide the same great support that they did when they were new and their owner was the guy manually setting up new virtuals for customers.  I can’t praise them enough, really.
